Build the Home Coffee Station Your Mornings Deserve

Cabinets, carts and countertop corners — setup, essentials and styling for every kitchen size and budget.

Four Ways to Set Up Your Station

Cabinet Setup

Everything closed away except what you reach for daily. The tidiest option if you have the wall space.

Rolling Cart

Works in a studio or a home office. No installation, and it rolls out of the way when you need the floor.

Countertop Corner

A tray is what turns a corner into a station. It marks the boundary without any building work.

Farmhouse Style

Warm wood, galvanised metal and glass jars. Suits kitchens that already lean traditional.

The National Coffee Association puts home brewing at 83% of coffee drinkers, up four points since 2020. That shift is why the coffee bar stopped being a machine shoved against a wall and became something people actually design.

The good news is that most of it is arrangement rather than purchase. A tray, a canister and somewhere to hang mugs will turn a countertop corner into a station. Everything below that is optional.

Choosing the Right Location

The most common setup and the one that requires no construction at all. Define the area visually with a tray, a small runner, or by painting or tiling the wall behind it. Standard kitchen counters sit at 36 inches, which suits most drip machines and pod systems. Allow 18 to 24 inches of clearance above the machine if you use an espresso maker with a steam wand.

Offers the most storage and the cleanest visual result, whether purpose-built or a repurposed sideboard or hutch. This is the fastest-growing setup type: coffee bar cabinet searches have very low competition despite substantial volume, making it a genuinely underserved area.

Look for a unit with a solid surface at working height, at least one drawer for small items, and a closed lower section for bulk storage of beans, filters and spare mugs.

The most flexible option and the best answer for apartments, studios and home offices. A cart 24 to 30 inches wide gives you a working surface plus two or three shelves, requires no installation, and can be wheeled aside entirely when you need the floor space.

The premium option: a dedicated run of cabinetry, often set at a lower 30 to 32 inch counter height, with an appliance garage to hide equipment and sometimes a plumbed water line. If you are already renovating a kitchen, allocating 24 to 36 inches of base cabinet to coffee is one of the higher-return decisions for a household that drinks it daily.

What to leave off

Editing is what separates a station that looks considered from a corner that simply accumulated. Almost no guide covers what to remove, yet that decision changes the result more than anything you add.

Coffee Bar Ideas for Small Spaces

A small kitchen can still hold a proper coffee bar. The answer is to build upward instead of outward — a single floating shelf above the counter holds four to six mugs and two small appliances while costing you no worktop at all.

In a flat or studio, a cart moves the whole station out of the kitchen and tucks away between uses. And the blind corner most kitchens waste will take a pull-out shelf, turning dead cabinet space into a station that disappears when closed.

Frequently Asked Questions

A coffee maker, six to eight mugs, an airtight bean canister and a tray to mark the boundary. That is genuinely it.

Everything else earns its place through daily use. Reach for it every morning and it stays out. Reach for it weekly and it lives nearby but out of sight.

Standard counter height of 36 inches suits most equipment. A dedicated built-in at 30 to 32 inches feels more purposeful and is easier to work at.

Whichever you pick, leave at least 18 inches of clearance above the machine. Below that you cannot fill a travel mug or work a steam wand comfortably.

Only in specific cases. A sink earns its cost if you make several drinks a day, run an espresso machine with a steam wand that needs rinsing, or the station sits a long way from your kitchen sink.

For a drip machine or pod system it means real plumbing work for very little daily benefit. A countertop filter or a good kettle covers the same need.

Almost none. A tray, a canister and a set of mug hooks will usually convert an existing corner into something that looks deliberate.

The station is defined by arrangement, not by spend. If it looks wrong with the machine you own, a more expensive machine will not fix it.

Away from the cooking triangle, so someone can make coffee without crossing the path of whoever is at the hob.

A run of counter on the dining side, or the end of an island, works well and keeps early morning traffic out of the working part of the kitchen.
